Our Mission
To help preserve and maintain the building and churchyard for future generations

High on a hill, the beautiful and well-preserved church of St Andrew’s occupies a dominant position overlooking the town of Stratton and the surrounding countryside. It has been the focus of Christian worship in the area for over 750 years.
St Andrew’s is a member church of the North Kernow Benefice within the Diocese of Truro.
St Andrew’s Church is a Grade 1 Listed Building with 13th century Norman stonework and a 13th century stone effigy.
-
The 14th century saw the addition of a north aisle. Further alterations and additions followed in the 15th century, when the tower was added, and also in the 16th century.
-
Considerable restoration work was undertaken in 1888 and then again in 1900, when a vestry (with a cellar beneath) was added to the north of the Lady Chapel. The present wooden rood screen was completed in 1907, replacing the 16th century screen removed by order of Henry VIII.
In 2018 ~ 19 the font was relocated to enable the creation of a social area and kitchen.
The photograph shows the new position.

-
St Andrew’s Grade 1 Listed status places a significant responsibility for stewardship upon the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and congregation of the day that entails a constant quest for funds and regular financial support.
-
Much of the original 13th century stonework remains intact and subsequent additions were carried out sympathetically and very much in keeping with the original. A north aisle was added in the 14th century and the imposing bell tower in the 15th century.
The Friends of St Andrew's Church ~ FoStA
-
FoStA is a sub-committee of the St Andrew’s PCC. However, it maintains a high degree of autonomy so far as fundraising and disbursements are concerned provided its core purpose is achieved, namely the maintenance and conservation of the church building and churchyard. The churchyard is also designated as a Commonwealth War Grave site.
If this is your first visit to this website – maybe as a potential visitor to the church, or as someone with current or past connections with St Andrew’s Church, please consider becoming a Friend.
-
FoStA receives donations directly from benefactors and regular givers and undertakes fundraising activities throughout the church’s year. Central to this mission is the generosity of the Friends themselves who currently number around 130. Their generous giving provides a stable platform upon which FoStA can build each year.

You can access the FoStA twice-yearly newsletters in the Members Area.
